Continence promotion following surgical repair of fractured neck of femur in older hospital patients
The primary aim of this project was to assess the prevalence and severity of post surgery continence problems among patients, aged 60 years and over, undergoing surgical fixation of fractured neck of femur (NOF). Promotion of an already developed clinical pathway; education and motivation sessions to a multidisciplinary groups of staff; and, the development of an information booklet targeted specifically to this patient group were undertaken.
The project revealed no significant change to incontinence symptoms experienced by fractured NOF patients undergoing intervention when compared to the control group. Although the project team recommended further studies be undertaken to increase the level of recruitment and participation in order to test the current findings, an underlying constraint focussed on the inability of the treating multi-disciplinary team to give attention to continence issues of patients in the acute setting during the course of the study.
