Continence Education North West Tasmania
Through provision of 68 education sessions to community groups and health workers throughout North West Tasmania (including King Island) over an 18 month period, a total of 1,230 people received continence awareness education.
The process and impact evaluation results indicated that the education supplied through the project has raised community awareness of continence among the target populations (particularly older women) and helped people to find appropriate local services to assist them in better managing their incontinence, including the National Continence Helpline.
The outcomes also highlighted that despite evidence of incontinence-related discussion taking place amongst the community as a result of this project, a significant level of reluctance to seek assistance from health professionals remains. This societal 'stigma' associated with incontinence remained well ingrained within the targeted communities.
