NCMS research
The NCMS supported more than 120 projects in its first eight years. Projects have included:
- studies of the extent of continence in the community;
- initiatives to increase community awareness of continence and the treatment services available;
- methods to improve the quality of continence services;
- studies of intervention and management alternatives; and
- an independent evaluation to identify the policy, service development and practice implications of project outcomes.
Project details are available in the NCMS section of this site, as well as background information on the NCMS.
A grants program was established in 2000 to promote innovation in the care, treatment, prevention and provision of information for adult Australians about incontinence. Four innovative grant rounds were funded:
- Education and information; preventive approaches; testing the cost effectiveness of different treatment options; mechanisms to support people who care for people with incontinence; and programs targeting groups with special needs;
- Nocturia; continence health for older men; continence care in the transition from acute to community or residential aged care facilities; and continence management needs of people with a disability;
- Assessment, treatment and management of faecal continence; and
- Prevention, treatment and/or education relating to continence issues for people who are ageing; men with, or at risk of, incontinence; and people with disabilities.
Additional funding rounds will be undertaken as part of the recent extension of the NCMS to 2010.
