Healthy bowel habits
Normal bowel habits can vary from one person to the next. Anything from several motions a day to several motions a week can be quite normal. It is the texture of the stools rather than how often they are passed that is important. The stool should be soft and easy to pass.
While you should always avoid rushing, it is generally accepted that you should take only a minute or so to empty your bowel. Never strain or hold your breath. Haemorrhoids (or piles) can result from straining. So get into the habit of using a good toilet position. Lean forward while sitting on the toilet, with a straight back and your forearms on your thighs. Your feet should be raised so that your legs are angled slightly upward and away from your body. A footstool may help you to find the best angle.
Regular exercise, drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of high fibre foods should keep your bowel healthy. Fibre, the roughage in plant foods, increases the bulk and softness of stools, making them easier to pass. It may be that a medicine that you are taking is causing bowel problems. Avoid relying on laxatives and use them only when needed - ask your doctor or continence advisor for help.
